K-156 Highway Closure & Summer Travel Information

A major construction project on K-156 will affect travel to the lake this summer. We want to make sure our visitors have the information they need to plan their trip and choose the route that works best for them.

Project Timeline

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation:

  • Highway closure begins: April 6, 2026
  • Anticipated reopening: On or before July 3, 2026 (weather permitting)
  • Full project completion: Late 2026

The closure will impact K-156 west of the U.S. 283 junction near Jetmore, where crews will widen shoulders, reconstruct the roadway, and replace structures as part of a regional highway improvement project.

Official KDOT Detour

During the closure, KDOT will direct traffic along a state-highway detour route using: U.S. 50, U.S. 400, U.S. 283, and K-23

KDOT uses state highways for official detours because they meet maintenance, safety, and weight-limit standards. Visitors following the official detour should expect additional travel time but will remain on maintained state routes.

Alternate Detours (County Roads)

Many locals and returning visitors may choose to travel on county roads for an alternate rural routes to reach the lake. While these routes may shorten the drive for some travelers, they are not official detours.

Important notes:

  • Road surfaces may vary.
  • Maintenance schedules differ from state highways.
  • Weather conditions can impact road quality.
  • Navigation apps may not always reflect current conditions.

Because of these factors, drivers should use their own judgment when choosing a route.

⚠️ We are sharing suggested routes only as general guidance. We cannot guarantee road conditions, accessibility, or maintenance levels on county roads.

Plan Ahead This Summer

We encourage visitors to:

  • Allow extra travel time
  • Check maps before leaving
  • Watch for construction signage and local traffic updates
  • Drive carefully on unfamiliar roads

Despite the highway construction, the lake is open and ready for summer visitors. We appreciate everyone’s patience while these improvements are made to allow for safer transportation on our highways.
